The importance of non-destructive testing

Feb 28, 2024
The main purpose of non-destructive testing is to provide real-time process quality control for raw materials, semi-finished products, finished products and product components that are processed non-continuously (such as multi-process production) or continuously processed (such as automated production lines), especially to control the metallurgical quality of product materials. and production process quality, such as defect status, organizational status, coating thickness monitoring, etc. At the same time, the quality information learned through testing can be fed back to the design and process department to further improve the design and manufacturing process to improve product quality. It has the effect of reducing scrap and reworked products, thereby reducing manufacturing costs and improving production efficiency.
It can be seen that non-destructive testing technology should be used in the production and manufacturing process to promptly detect various defects in the original and during processing and control them accordingly to prevent raw materials and semi-finished products that do not meet quality requirements from flowing into the next process and avoid futile efforts. The resulting waste of man-hours, manpower, raw materials and energy also prompts improvements in design and process, that is, to avoid "deficient quality" in the final product.

On the other hand, non-destructive testing technology can also be used to control the quality level of materials and products within the range suitable for use and performance requirements based on acceptance standards, avoiding the so-called "excess quality" caused by unlimited improvement in quality requirements. Non-destructive testing technology can also be used to determine the location of defects through inspection, and certain defective materials or semi-finished products can be used without affecting the design performance. For example, the defects are within the machining allowance, or local grinding or repair is allowed. Or adjust the processing technology so that the defects are located in the parts to be processed and removed, etc., thereby improving the utilization rate of materials and obtaining good economic benefits.
Therefore, non-destructive testing technology plays an important role in reducing manufacturing costs, improving material utilization, improving production efficiency, and enabling products to meet both performance requirements (quality level) and economic benefits.
